1. During pregnancy, the feeding amount is too high, and the piglets tend to be overweight before going to the delivery bed. Within 1-2 days of delivery, the feeding amount is too large, and the feeding is too early in the later stage, resulting in the mother pig's breasts being filled with fat fetuses. During lactation, the feeding amount decreases and lactation is not possible. In the first few days after delivery, the milk level is too fast, and the piglets cannot finish it. The milk flows back to the mother pig, causing mastitis. During pregnancy, the stomach of the sow did not dilate or expand. Overfeeding during the early stages of pregnancy can suppress the appetite of sows, causing them to lose excitement and a weak sense of hunger.
2. The palatability of nursing feed is poor, the nutritional level is low, the utilization rate is low, and the energy, lysine, valine, and arginine are unbalanced, which can reduce the feed intake of sows. Generally, fat is added to sow feed, but excessive fat can reduce the feed intake of sows, especially when the fat addition is greater than 10%.
3. Severe heat stress. High temperature has the greatest impact on maternal feeding. When the external temperature exceeds 28 degrees, sows will reduce their food intake to reduce metabolic heat production in their bodies to cope with external heat. When the temperature is at 25 degrees, for every degree increase in temperature, the average daily food intake decreases by 200 grams, resulting in low feed digestibility and increased body heat after eating, exacerbating sow heat stress. Ventilation and cooling measures are not in place.
4. Poor water quality and low water intake, unclean drinking water, can affect the water intake of sows. The position and height of the water dispenser are unreasonable, making it inconvenient for pigs to drink water. This can also lead to a decrease in the water intake of sows. The direct consequence of a decrease in water intake is a decrease in feed intake and lactation.
5. Feeding management: Free feeding during lactation is an effective way to maximize the feed intake of sows, but long-term retention of feed in the feeding trough increases the risk of feed spoilage, especially when feeding wet mixed feed in summer. If the feed is not fresh and spoiled, it will seriously affect the feed intake of the mother pig. The number of feedings will also affect the feed intake of the sow. Compared to feeding two or three pigs per day, switching to feeding four pigs per day can increase the feed intake of the sow.
Adding 4-8% fresh fermented feed to the feed of lactating sows can significantly improve their feed intake and increase the absorption rate of the feed, achieving the effect of promoting feeding and enhancing immunity. Especially in high temperature and high humidity seasons, this effect is particularly prominent, so fresh fermented feed is a good choice for lactating sows in summer.
